چکیده

a bstract background: mechanical ventilation is one of the supporting treatments that are used for different reasons. to reduce patients’ inconvenience caused due to using tracheal tube and ventilator, sedation is routinely used. using scales for the sedation, for example, richmond agitation sedation scale (rass), may reduce dose of sedation and length of mechanical ventilation.   materials and methods: this study is a randomized clinical trial on 64 patients selected from three intensive care units (icus ) in isfahan, iran. through random allocation, 32 patients were assigned to each of the study and control groups. in the control group, patients’ level of consciousness and the amount of drug consumption in every shift, based on physician order, were recorded. in the study group, rass score was recorded every hour and sedation was administered based on that. the purpose of the study was to investigate of application of rass for drug consumption until weaning of the patient from the ventilator. independent t ‑test with significance level of 0.05 was used.   results: results showed no significant difference in the mean consumption of midazolam and morphine after intervention, but there was a significant difference in fentanyl ( p = 0.03) consumption (379 ìg in the control group vs 75 ìg in the study group) between groups after the intervention. the mean duration of being connected to the ventilator was significantly less in the study group ( p = 0.03).   conclusions: application of rass by nurses leads to a decrease in sedation consumption, connection to ventilator, and length of stay in the hospital.

The Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale: validity and reliability in adult intensive care unit patients.

Sedative medications are widely used in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Structured assessment of sedation and agitation is useful to titrate sedative medications and to evaluate agitated behavior, yet existing sedation scales have limitations. We measured inter-rater reliability and validity of a new 10-level (+4 "combative" to -5 "unarousable") scale, the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale ...

[The correlation among the Ramsay sedation scale, Richmond agitation sedation scale and Riker sedation agitation scale during midazolam-remifentanil sedation].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Sedative and analgesic treatment administered to critically ill patients need to be regularly assessed to ensure that previously stated goals are well achieved as the risk of complications of oversedation is minimized. We revised and prospectively tested the Ramsay Sedation Scale (RSS) for interrater reliability and compared it with the Riker Sedation-Agitation Scale (...

Effect of Chlorhexidine and Orthodentol Mouthwash on Oral Hygiene of Patients Who Underwent Mechanical Ventilation, Hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit

Background: Providing oral hygiene in patients with a tracheal tube in the mouth is one of the most important tasks of nurses. This study has been conducted with the aim of comparing the effects of two mouthwash solutions (chlorhexidine and orthodentol) on the oral hygiene of patients with respiratory ventilation device and hospitalized in intensive care units. Methods: This is a clinical tria...

Background & Aim: Sedation after coronary artery bypass graft surgery can prevent the side effects of the treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of controlled sedation based on the Richmond scale on the duration of mechanical ventilation and the changes of blood pressure in patients following coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Methods & Materials: In a single blind...

Protocol-directed sedation versus non-protocol-directed sedation to reduce duration of mechanical ventilation in mechanically ventilated intensive care patients.

BACKGROUND The sedation needs of critically ill patients have been recognized as a core component of critical care and meeting these is vital to assist recovery and ensure humane treatment. There is growing evidence to suggest that sedation requirements are not always optimally managed. Sub-optimal sedation incorporates both under- and over-sedation and has been linked to both short-term (e.g. ...
